Near cinema-quality best home theater projectors are not as expensive as they used to be, so you don’t need a huge budget to turn your living room into a movie theater. That’s great news. But there is one problem. Chances are that your living room is not capable of complete darkness, letting in ambient light.

The room that works so well for your TV is not ideal for most projectors. Which is why 4K UHD projectors are not in every home like TVs.

However, the BenQ TK800 solves this problem nicely using 3,000 lumens of brightness. In fact, it handles ambient light better than most 4K projectors. Even better than the BenQ HT2550. We loved that projector and this latest from BenQ has the same great color accuracy and works even better when you don’t have complete darkness.

This project is a solid performer.

Sports fans are going to love the BenQ TK800M. I mean, it can produce an image up to 300” in size. But is it worth the price? Read on to find out.

  • Cinema Mode delivers amazing color accuracy
  • 3,000 lumens of brightness
  • Great HDR performance

  • It may be out of your budget
  • Blacks aren’t perfect

BenQ 4K TK800M Projector Design

BenQ put some thought into this new BenQ TK800m 4K projector. The TK800M comes with a backlit remote control that is handy for dark rooms, which is a nice touch, as is the blue front of the unit, making it stand out from the crowd of boring white competitors. This definitely catches the eye. It also has some basic controls on the top of the unit for when things aren’t dark and you don’t have the remote.

It has a small speaker, but it won’t give you a cinema sound. As with most other home entertainment projectors, you will want to connect external speakers through a receiver. Or use a soundbar. It does make a bit of noise but seemed quieter than the HT2550.

There’s no lens shift here, but it does have an extendable foot at the front bottom to adjust the height of the image. While this can cause keystone distortions, the TK800 has auto-correction, so it couldn’t be easier to set up quickly.

BenQ TK800M Connectivity

As far as connectivity, the TK800 4K has your typical audio and video options. It has two HDMI ports, one is HDCP 2.2 for 4K devices, and the other is for 1080p devices. Then there’s VGA, 3.5 mm audio in and out, and a 1DC 12V Trigger.

Other Features

It supports High Dynamic Range, so it is ideal for those popcorn flicks, immersive gaming, or watching 4K sports in sport mode.

The TK800m 4K HDR video projector lamp is rated to 4,000 hours lamp life, but you can get 15,000 hours from it while in “SmartEco” mode, which helps to extend the life of the lamp.

This wide color gamut projector delivers 8.3 million pixels and special HDR processing that is intended to give you optimal color balance and contrast. Add in 3000 lumens of brightness and you have yourself a truly stunning cinema projector for any dark room. BenQ’s new 4K color wheel delivers 92% of the Rec.709 color space and the projector’s 120 Hz refresh rate eliminates any image blur.

The 1.2× optical zoom makes it easy to use anywhere. If you have a small room, you can place it closer to the screen. I got a 16:9 picture that was about 100 inches while the projector was about 8 feet away. This feature is super convenient, allowing you to always get big results.

All of the classics look amazing. My pictures don’t do it justice.

BenQ TK800M Performance

I tested the BenQ TK800M in daylight, low light and as dark as possible conditions at night and the image quality didn’t disappoint in any of those environments. It does better than most models in bright conditions naturally, thanks to those lumens. You can play with the modes and see which one works for you in various light conditions. I found that Vivid TV mode worked best when I couldn’t get the room dark enough, for instance, giving me accurate color. You won’t fail to get great image integrity and color.

You can choose from Football, Sport, Bright, Vivid TV and Cinema Mode.

Cinema Mode was the absolute best for dark rooms though, if you want a true cinema experience. Add HDR and it delivers some amazing images and vivid colors. This projector really does make your room into a private movie theater. Especially when watching 4K content and sports. It is breathtaking. Watching sports is always good.

I tested it with streaming movies, Blu-rays, Ultra Blu-rays, a PS4 and Xbox One. When 4K gaming, I didn’t see any noticeable lag either, which was a pleasant surprise. I also found this model to be quieter than previous BenQ models that I’ve tested. The 4k color wheel and cooling fan make some noise, but not a lot.

Raiders Of The Lost Ark never looked so good.

BenQ TK800M Bottom Line & Review Wrap Up

I can safely say that I was blown away by this home cinema projector. BenQ TK800m 4K HDR video looks amazing. It is one of the best that I have tested. I spent about 20 hours with it all told, and just got lost in what I was watching. The colors are beautiful and vivid, the blacks are not perfect, but the rest of this projector is near perfect and it is very versatile.

That optical zoom makes it great for almost any size room and is easy to set up and use. This 4K UHD 3840×2160 projector is proof that today you don’t have to spend a fortune to get cinema quality entertainment at home. It is hard to resist for the price.

My verdict is to get it right now so that you can start enjoying it. This is one of those home theater projectors that can definitely replace the TV for many people. You gotta love that true 4K UHD from a projector with an easy setup.

Other top picks for 4K projectors include the BenQ HT3550, Viewsonic 4K, Epson 5050UB, and the BenQ HT5550.
