Their Engagement Ring Stories

In partnership with our friends at Simon G. Jewelry

It was copywriter Mary Frances Gerety who dazzled the world in 1948 with what is widely considered one of the most brilliant—and effective—advertising slogans ever: A Diamond Is Forever. But a lot has changed in the last seven decades. Personality trumps tradition; originality outshines uniformity. After all, an engagement ring is as much a reflection of individuality as it is a token of a lifelong bond. Every cut, design, and setting carries special meaning—the kind that’s truly worth its weight in gold. Just ask these wives and soon-to-be wives.

  3. Tell us about the proposal. “My proposal was…there was no proposal. Sam was essentially just thinking out loud, ‘I guess we should get you a ring?’ And that was that. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

Tell us about your ring. “We went to the diamond district downtown in Los Angeles and walked around the different shops together, asking the vendors to pull out whatever antique pieces they had on hand. It was all very casual, and Sam did ask me to marry him before handing over his credit card.”

My personal style can be summed up as: “Nineties meets feminine.”

An average day goes something like this: “I wake up around the same time as my toddler and snuggle with him for twenty minutes before running out the door. Then it’s work, work, work at the office, until it’s time to go home to feed my son dinner, snuggle some more, and put him down for the night. I usually log on for a bit before bed to wrap up projects left over from the day while Netflix is playing in the background (Mad Men, Sabrina, Fleabag).”

My workweek uniform consists of: “Cardigans, sneakers, and anything high-waisted.”

Come weekends, you can find me: “Running around somewhere nature-y with my son during the day, with the occasional date night in the evening.”

When I want to feel inspired, I go to: “The stacks—whenever I feel stuck, I pick up a book.”

My ring style can best be described as: “Antique and intricate, but not over-the-top.”

  3. Tell us about the proposal. “He asked me at home with my grandma’s wedding ring (I knew it was coming because my mom had FedEx’d the ring!). Later, he gave me the one that he had designed himself. I love both equally and wear them on separate hands.”

Tell us about your rings. “My grandma’s ring has two rows of teeny diamonds; it’s simple and classic. My ring from Clark is a round diamond in a bezel set; it’s so practical. (He designed it in watercolor.)”

    My personal style is: “Minimal.”

An average day goes something like this: “6 a.m. wake up, 7 a.m. workout, 9 a.m. office. My day-to-day is always different, heading from shoot locations to appointments to see the latest collections, and it usually ends with dinner at home with Clark.”

My workweek uniform consists of: “Paper-thin cashmere sweaters with a structured pant or skirt—and always, always sticking to my color wheel: black and navy.”

Come weekends, you can find me: “Doing nothing—I’m a total homebody on the weekends.”

When I want to feel inspired, I go to: “Paris for the shows—the city, the fashion, the people, there’s something so inspiring about the spectacle of it all. And when I’m not in work mode, I find uninterrupted downtime incredibly inspiring, whether it’s a moment to myself on an airplane, relaxing by the pool, or kicking back at the beach.”

My ring style can best be described as: “Also minimal.”

  3. Tell us about the proposal. “We’ve always been super open about our future together, but when it came to the actual proposal, Mike wanted to keep an element of surprise. So on a trip to Greece, he popped the question overlooking the water off of Santorini. He asked me in private, which was a big deal to me, not to mention a total surprise, as we had talked about not getting engaged while on the trip. That sly fox…”

Tell us about your ring. “I never wanted something conventional. I loved the idea of a sapphire or emerald, so it felt like the cosmos aligned when Mike’s mom gave us a sapphire stone that she’d bought when he was a baby (she said it reminded her of his eyes). The rest of the ring came together with the addition of two small diamonds from another ring my dad had given me years before and a little vintage inspiration I’d collected over the years. It’s perfect and uniquely me.”

    My personal style is: “Laid-back.”

An average day goes something like this: “I lie in bed reading the news and slowly wake up. Lately, I’ve been trying to take a few minutes to go outside on my porch and sit in the sun while I have my coffee. Then I head to work and start checking off to-dos with my team. Post-work is always different: Some days I head to the gym; others I have an event. But my favorite is when I come straight home to have dinner with my dude.”

My workweek uniform consists of: “High-waisted pants and an easy tee with Birkenstocks and my go-to Jennifer Fisher hoops.”

Come weekends, you can find me: “Relaxing with friends…or in the aisles of Home Depot (we just bought a house!).”

When I want to feel inspired, I go to: “Nature—the beach or one of LA’s many hilly parks. And when I’m up for it, I love venturing downtown to check out an art gallery or one of the cool indie shops or cafés for people-watching and culture.”

My ring style can best be described as: “Unconventional…with a bit of a vintage vibe.”
